My friend Hab taught me how to track the fiercest savage. Discovering new evidence about the nature of my target is my daily obsession. I give as much careful attention to every moment I sit in my blind and wait for an appearance as a hunter might give to taking an eight-point buck.
Today, again, I am rewarded.
I see my savage coming. On his back is his bow and quiver. At his side is a glittering spear. He is huge and unworldly. His coat glows like the sunrise. I am keenly aware of the vast hidden power of his hands. Smaller prey scatters ahead of him, and death scavengers are close behind.
He stops and the earth shakes.
Then he moves.
Instantly the earth responds and violently rearranges. Mountains shatter, hills flatten, and the sea splits in two. The deep places cry out to him. The sun and moon freeze in their tracks.
I tremble in my hiding place, foolishly aware that I am completely seen by him.
Is he angry at the sea, mountains, and hills?
Is he displeased with them?
“No, he is saving US!” my friend Hab (Habakkuk) hollers above the noise. (3:8)
Knowing how much this mighty savage likes to have His actions recapped, Hab narrates.
“You marched across the land in anger and trampled the nations in your fury. You went out to rescue your chosen people, to save your anointed ones. You crushed the heads of the wicked and stripped their bones from head to toe. With his own weapons you destroyed the chief of those who rushed out like a whirlwind, thinking your people would be easy prey.” (3:12-14)
At this “sighting” of my savage, my fervor is renewed. I will continue my watch because HE IS THE ONLY ONE who can save me. This same “Terror of The Nations” seeks to rescue me!
And…
He crazy loves me!
And not just me, but ALL who will receive His love.
His love is not a temporary “boyfriend love,” but an “I-made-you-so-you-can-delight-in-me-and-talk-to-me-and-be-my-beloved-child-forever” kind of love.
It turns out, given the savage nature of My Almighty, that He will go to great lengths to save and protect me.
Because of His eccentric and powerful actions to protect me, I must warn the enemy who seeks to crush my faith.
“Watch out!”
As for my focus, the words of Habakkuk 3:16 sum up what my daily faith posture should be.
“I will wait quietly for the coming day when disaster will strike the people who invade us.
Even though…
the fig trees have no blossoms,
And there are no grapes on the vines;
Even though the olive crop fails,
And the fields lie empty and barren;
Even though the flocks die in the fields,
And the cattle barns are empty.
Yet…
I will rejoice in the Lord!
I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!
The Sovereign Lord is my strength!
He makes me as surefooted as a deer, able to tread upon the heights.
Because of Habakkuk’s testimony, I know I can walk surefooted on the “heights” of what might cause me to despair, EVEN THOUGH things like failed crops, failed dreams, barrenness, emptiness, death, and oppression surround me.
These opponents cannot survive the force of the love and help The Mighty Savage offers to His children!
Read Habakkuk. Three brief chapters will give a lifetime of endurance and blessing.
Happy hunting!
